CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A historic 1,000-lb cornerstone with a 19th-century time capsule was rediscovered at the courthouse after decades of being lost. Officials will move the artifact to the new county courthouse under construction with a re-dedication ceremony set for March — the find ties to Santa Rosa's past. KSRO Radio
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Rincon Valley Unified School District is set to vote tonight on closing a campus to address an $8.5-million deficit, with officials recommending Douglas Whited Elementary to save over one million dollars and avoid a fiscal crisis. Staff layoffs will be determined in February after union negotiations. KSRO Radio
- ➤ The Sonoma Valley Unified School District approved the STEAM-focused MacArthur Park Charter School by a 4-1 vote last Thursday and it will open in August for 186 elementary students. The school may use the Prestwood Elementary campus, set to close this May — though trustees raised concerns. KSRO Radio
- ➤ Santa Rosa City Schools plan a citizen-led parcel tax to raise up to $20 million each year through a November ballot measure (which requires a 50 percent vote) to help prevent a state takeover and offset severe budget cuts. Funding from the tax will begin in 2027. KSRO Radio
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Health officials lifted wastewater advisories for Doran, Campbell Cove and Salmon Creek beaches after tests confirmed safe water levels following a sewage spill in Guerneville last Thursday + warnings remain in place for Gualala, Black Point and Goat Rock beaches until Monday. KSRO Radio
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Town of Windsor is accepting applications for its Youth Mayor program from local students in kindergarten through eighth grade (launched in 2022 by Mayor Rosa Reynoza). Applicants will gain experience at ribbon cuttings and council meetings, and applications are due January 22nd. KSRO Radio
