Good morning, Santa Rosa. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 5th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A sixteen-year-old from Petaluma was found safe Sunday night after going missing Tuesday afternoon, and police credited community tips for reuniting him with his parents.  KSRO Radio
  • Residents in Santa Rosa’s McDonald Historic District submitted a petition with over 100 signatures Monday to oppose a permit for removing a 70-foot coast redwood causing sidewalk damage. City planners are reviewing the permit while neighbors suggest using a bulbout — a sidewalk curve system — instead.  KSRO Radio
  • Santa Rosa Police launched a month-long safety operation this month to reduce high-risk driving, such as speeding and illegal turns, that endanger cyclists. Drivers are urged to give riders three feet of space while bicyclists are advised to ride with traffic (and always wear helmets).  KSRO Radio

CIVIC NEWS

  • Hundreds marched peacefully in Santa Rosa on Friday to mark May Day with a demonstration supporting workers’ rights. The event, organized by North Bay Jobs with Justice, united over four dozen unions and advocacy groups to spotlight wage issues and economic challenges affecting local industries.  KSRO Radio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lauren Stevens received texts meant for famed photographer Wernher Krutein and soon launched a GoFundMe campaign along with social media (Verndawgtales) to help him preserve his legacy and stabilize his finances in Sonoma County.  NBC Bay Area

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A study by Health in Partnership shows Sonoma County farmworkers face low wages, poor health, and housing troubles as wine and dairy groups cut hours and shift to automation; advocates support raising the minimum wage to $19.75 to help families meet rising costs (median farmworker income is about $15,000 annually).  KSRO Radio
  • Oil industry leaders (experts) warn gas prices will continue to rise due to global supply shortages and reduced deliveries from the Strait of Hormuz, which may drive up pump costs in Santa Rosa.  NBC Bay Area

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Santa Rosa Sylvan Learning Center — a 25-year-old institution — abruptly closed today after franchise owners James and Laura Rogers filed for bankruptcy amid falling enrollment and rising costs, leaving families with lost prepaid funds and tutoring gaps. Sylvan Corporate will manage personal file disposal while nearby centers remain independent.  KSRO Radio
  • On Friday, the Sonoma County Office of Education held the first-ever Mouse Games on a Santa Rosa blacktop where students competed in adapted events from cornhole to a dance-off that saw Manzanita Elementary win gold; Amarosa Academy helped run the event (named to honor Nathaniel The Mouse Mueller).  KSRO Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Santa Rosa Police Department is launching a month-long safety operation to warn drivers to double-check their mirrors for motorcycles, which can be hidden in blind spots, as warmer weather brings more riders to the road. Motorcyclists are also advised to use reflective gear plus avoid distractions while riding.  KSRO Radio
