Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 21st of May.
Good morning, Santa Rosa.
🏘️ Community
Betty Carr, the founder of Mom's Apple Pie, passed away on May 13 at age 95.
Her sons remember her as a brave pioneer who moved from Japan in 1949 to build a local institution and now honor her legacy through community donations at Hessel Church in Sebastopol.
Nearly thirty police runners, joined by Mayor Mark Stapp, carried the Flame of Hope over five miles from Santa Rosa to Rohnert Park in a torch run for the Special Olympics.
The flame was passed to CHP for the opening ceremonies as part of a year-long effort that raised $50K.
🌲 Environment
Sonoma Water received a record $47.8 million state grant to overhaul 34 miles of Russian River sewer lines — the upgrades will modernize 11 pump stations and expand treatment capacity from Rio Nido to Vacation Beach while raising emergency generators above flood stage.
🏛️ Government
Under new CalFresh rules going into effect on June 1, about 665,000 Californians could lose benefits unless they meet a 20-hour work requirement.
State officials note that exemptions remain for pregnant individuals, people with disabilities and others in need (a measure to support vulnerable groups).
Congressman Mike Thompson hit the Sonoma County campaign trail ahead of the June 2 primary, showcasing decades of service by delivering federal funds, while newcomer Eric Jones, a former venture capitalist, mounts a challenge with matched fundraising and a personal investment of $300K.
