- ➤ Officials announced Wednesday that five gray whales died in the Bay Area over the past week, raising the year's death toll to 14. The California Academy of Sciences and The Marine Mammal Center reported the whales were found at locations including Alcatraz, Point Bonita, Berkeley, Fisherman’s Bay and Bolinas — some deaths may have been linked to vessel strikes as investigations continue.
