BUSINESS NEWS

  • Republic Services will resume trash collection on Saturday after a tentative deal was reached between company and union officials following a 10-day strike that halted service in 24 Bay Area cities. Union members will vote on the contract on Sunday— the deal includes a 10% pay raise and added benefits.  NBC Bay Area

CRIME NEWS

  • A protester was arrested on Thursday morning for climbing a tree and not coming down while he tried to stop tree cutting on the Joe Rodota Trail—three other protesters helped delay the work, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office said.  KSRO Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • El Verano and eastern Sonoma Valley are now critical Groundwater Sustainability Priority Areas as well levels have dropped dramatically—up to 100 feet in a decade with some wells falling eight feet a year. Over-pumping and changes in local geology and climate change have put thousands of homes and farms at risk of land sinking and seawater intrusion.  KSRO Radio
  • FEMA has released preliminary flood maps for the Santa Rosa Creek Watershed that show high-risk flood zones and may lead to new flood insurance requirements and building rules. About 50 unincorporated properties near Matanzas Creek and Santa Rosa Creek are affected — the public can comment during a 90-day appeal period this winter.  KSRO Radio
  • Sonoma County firefighters are battling the Green Fire near Lake Shasta that has burned 17,288 acres and is 17 percent contained since it started on July 1. Waterborne strike teams shuttle about 400 firefighters in boats while crews work 12-hour shifts — a key measure in fighting the blaze — in rugged terrain.  KSRO Radio
