- ➤ Scott Fitzpatrick of Petaluma Poultry is suing animal welfare group Direct Action Everywhere for a temporary restraining order to prevent protesters from gathering outside his Sebastopol home—he says his family has faced ongoing harassment. - ➤ Leon Simms Junior is facing felony charges after he allegedly attacked and robbed a public defender near the courthouse last Thursday; he asked for extra time to hire a private attorney during his Tuesday court appearance and is held on $500,000 bail. KSRO Radio
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ U.S. Rep. Sam Liccardo pressed NOAA on whether federal staffing and funding cuts are making whale protection harder in the Bay Area. He sent a letter with 20 cosigners noting that 24 whales have died this year—many struck by boats—prompting calls for urgent investigation. NBC Bay Area
- ➤ Early Tuesday morning, Safari West in Santa Rosa welcomed a healthy Southern white rhinoceros calf named Ozzy — the new addition is expected to enhance the preserve's breeding program. NBC Bay Area
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A federal appeals court ruled Thursday that California's law requiring background checks for buying bullets is unconstitutional because it limits the right to keep guns — the law was approved by voters in 2016 and took effect in 2019. NBC Bay Area
- ➤ Sonoma County Sheriff Eddie Engram said his office interacted with ICE officials after the local jail received 484 release notifications last year and responded 64 times out of more than 14,000 bookings + two inmates were transferred to ICE custody following federal warrants. Between January and March this year, the jail received 128 release date notifications and 44 additional information requests, while ICE arrested eight people at the facility. KSRO Radio
- ➤ The Santa Rosa Police Department is conducting training exercises today from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Santa Rosa Avenue near the Roxy Theater and at the Santa Rosa Plaza parking lot—officers and volunteers will help manage traffic—using realistic venues provided by both locations. KSRO Radio
LIFESTYLE NEWS
- ➤ Stargazers in Santa Rosa can see three meteor showers in late July as the Alpha Capricornids and Southern Delta Aquariids peak on July 30 while the Perseids peak around Aug. 12 with the moon setting early to let dark skies prevail. Experts advise moving to dark areas and lying back for about 30 minutes+ this allows eyes to adjust to spot the meteors clearly. KSRO Radio
