Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 8th of August.
Good morning, Santa Rosa.
🏘️ Community
The new Glen Ellen farmers market scheduled for Sunday, August 17 at Woodland Star Charter School has been postponed because the Sonoma County Department of Health Services did not receive the required application 30 days ahead.
Organizers said they will secure local farmers and announce a new opening date in about a month — giving them extra time to prepare.
💼 Business
Workers at Bartholomew Estate Winery in Sonoma began picking unripe Sauvignon Blanc grapes on Wednesday morning to produce verjus (a nonalcoholic acidic juice) and flavor extracts for future products.
🚨 Crime
Amtrak conductor Bruce Garrett settled a federal lawsuit—resolved last Friday in U.S. District Court in Sacramento—that he filed after a police officer fatally shot Sonoma County man Nicholas Detweiler on a stopped train on Christmas Day 2023, and the case involved Amtrak and Mount Shasta.
Arron Stanfield was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of felony attempted burglary when a security camera captured him trying to open a Sonoma home’s door—he led deputies on a brief foot chase and ran into oncoming traffic before being tackled—and now faces several charges.
🏛️ Government
Sonoma County Department of Health Services and nonprofit HomeFirst launched a Rapid Rehousing Program to help about 20 unhoused individuals in Sonoma Valley by offering financial assistance for rent and security deposits + giving landlords up to $1,000 in incentives to participate.
🏥 Health
Kaiser Permanente in Santa Rosa opened an $18 million oncology infusion clinic on August 7—consolidating services into a larger center with 34 treatment bays instead of 21—to better serve patients and staff.
Kaiser officials said the expansion comes as Sonoma County’s cancer rates remain stable, offering improved care in a single location.
📰 Real Estate
Construction of nearly 800 new homes is underway in northwest Santa Rosa on a former dairy farm off Guerneville Road and Lance Drive, where crews began clearing the 34-acre site on August 7.
The project will build 98 single-family homes and 672 apartments — it will also include pools, playgrounds, a bike path, and a commercial building.
