Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 20th of August.
Good morning, Santa Rosa.
🏘️ Community
At a town hall in Penngrove, over 200 residents demanded safer roads amid worries about speeding and crashes that caused over 450 collisions and multiple fatalities in five years—county officials presented a $9 million plan to build two roundabouts on Old Redwood Highway at Railroad Avenue and Ely Road with construction set for 2027.
🚧 Accidents
A small plane registered to a Santa Rosa resident crashed off the Humboldt County coast near Shelter Cove Airport on Sunday afternoon—one of the two men on board was killed and it remains unclear if he was the owner while the surviving passenger was stabilized and flown to a hospital after the aircraft went into the ocean shortly after takeoff.
Natalee Fisher, a 19-year-old Santa Rosa resident, died Saturday in a local hospital after being hit by a car while walking her dog on West Steele Lane near Hilliard Comstock Northwest Community Park— the driver remained at the scene and is not suspected of speeding or impairment, and the dog was injured.
🚨 Crime
In northwest Santa Rosa, police arrested 71-year-old Khanh Trong Tran after a video showed him smothering his 94-year-old father-in-law, and detectives say he did it because he saw his father-in-law as a money burden—he remains in jail with no bail.
🏛️ Government
Over 60 property owners are suing SMART—arguing it does not have the right to build a public path across their land—which threatens a key segment of the Great Redwood Trail that will run from Marin to Humboldt counties; mediation is scheduled for November.
Santa Rosa officials will decide today on a proposed gas station called Elm Tree Station after the planning commission denied its permit in April due to health and safety concerns.
The project is exempt from the 2022 ban on new stations — officials will review if it fits local land-use policies and climate goals.
Santa Rosa City Council will lower speed limits by 5 mph on over two dozen streets, including Santa Rosa Avenue and Fulton Road, to improve traffic safety in high-collision areas — new signs will be installed over the coming months with police issuing a 30-day warning period.
The southbound lanes at Hearn Avenue were closed from 11 p.m. Monday until 5 a.m. today and the northbound lanes will be closed overnight Wednesday into Thursday while construction crews install supports for a new highway overpass on Highway 101.
The nearly $44 million project started last spring.
