- ➤ Two animal sanctuaries in Sonoma Valley are receiving many calls from people wanting to surrender roosters, geese, and hens—Rhianna Axon of Charlie’s Acres Farm Animal Sanctuary reported her facility is now full and that calls are coming in daily. Sonoma Chicks Rescue and Sanctuary faces a similar surge as owners increasingly seek help with their birds. KSRO Radio
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Santa Rosa Police arrested 19-year-old Eliel Ortega Rendon after a road rage incident near Sebastopol Road and West Avenue—he intentionally hit a 22-year-old bicyclist and followed him into a parking lot—with the victim sustaining only minor injuries while the suspect now faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and gang enhancement. - ➤ Santa Rosa police shot twenty-year-old Matteo Ramirez-Santos on August 14th after he arrived at his ex-girlfriend’s home armed following a standoff that began the previous night—officers said he fired at them before a SWAT officer killed him, and he was wanted for a domestic violence incident on August 2nd. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Cal Fire said the Pickett Fire near Calistoga expanded to 3,993 acres with 7% containment as firefighters used helicopters and ground teams. New evacuation orders were issued for areas—south of James Creek and along Dutch Henry Canyon Road—and air quality advisories were extended in Napa, Sonoma and Solano counties. NBC Bay Area
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Sonoma County will reopen Westside Road in Forestville on Thursday, August 28 — the county will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon as part of six repair projects approved after severe winter storms damaged the area. KSRO Radio
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Sonoma County averages 12 overdose deaths a month and is the third highest among Bay Area counties, county officials said as they proclaimed Aug 30 as Overdose Awareness Day. The county Department of Health will host a free, family-friendly event in Santa Rosa from 1—4 p.m.—featuring music, art, food and a demonstration of Naloxone to help the community learn about fentanyl risks.
