Good morning, Santa Rosa.
🏘️ Community
On Monday, hundreds gathered at Old Courthouse Square in Santa Rosa for a 'Workers Over Billionaires' protest that aimed to defend programs like Medicaid and Social Security while opposing policies impacting immigrants.
Organizers estimated about 500 people attended the event—May Day Strong coordinated the nationwide demonstration with similar rallies held in other North Bay areas.
🚧 Accidents
A fire on Sunday in South Santa Rosa burned four trailers and forced six residents to leave Rosa Vista Trailer Park—starting in roadside plants along Highway 101—and caused about $150,000 in damage and heavy traffic jams while officials investigated the cause, with no injuries reported.
A pickup truck veered off Highway 12 west of Dutton Avenue on Sunday night and struck a tree, killing its only occupant; officials said the crash is under investigation.
A fire broke out Sunday morning at 4:55 a.m. in a Rohnert Park townhouse on Santa Alicia Drive, displacing two residents and their dog, and firefighters contained the blaze in 30 minutes — investigators believe an electrical malfunction in a wall caused the fire — while smoke and water damage rendered the home uninhabitable.
🚨 Crime
A Santa Rosa woman, Maria Sebastian, pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 10 years in prison today for causing a fatal DUI crash last November on Lakeville Highway that killed Kathleen Swensen (77) and injured two others.
A Sonoma Valley man led deputies on a mile-long foot chase through multiple neighborhoods and was arrested on suspicion of burglary, petty theft and resisting arrest—he was later found hiding in a shed on Riverside Drive with stolen property, house keys and bail set at $80K.
🏛️ Government
A Sonoma County judge issued a preliminary injunction on Friday that bans Direct Action Everywhere from protesting within 200 feet of the Sebastopol home of Petaluma Poultry employee Scott Fitzpatrick and from using amplified sound—rules set after weeks of protests over alleged animal cruelty. Direct Action Everywhere said the order violates free speech—while Petaluma Poultry insisted it protects their staff from harassment as a lawsuit proceeds.
