Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law making Diwali an official statewide holiday—set to take effect Jan.
1—that will let public schools close and state employees opt for a paid day off while observing traditions celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists. California becomes the third state to grant this holiday official status, following similar steps in Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

97-year-old Art Lind plays tennis, pickleball and works out daily, and his son Jeff signed him up for an International Tennis Federation tournament for seniors over 90—he left for Croatia Tuesday morning.
His cardiologist confirmed that his heart is expected to last as long as he lives.
