Good morning, Santa Rosa. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 4th of November.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Many renowned chefs and winemakers gathered to honor Ash for his innovative farm to table approach and kind nature that transformed local dining. Friends said his cookbooks, a radio show spanning many years and lasting influence continue to guide upcoming culinary talent—ensuring his legacy lives on in our community.  KSRO Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sonoma State University announced deep budget cuts in January to address a projected $23.9 million deficit—cutting key programs, reducing faculty, and eliminating degrees as enrollment dropped 38% since 2015. Legislators later secured a $90 million one-time funding boost to help restore some programs and jobs as the university works to rebuild enrollment.  KSRO Radio
  • Hundreds of Santa Rosa unionized teachers and staff gathered last week to demand an outside audit of district finances amid growing distrust in school leadership. The district—which serves about 12,000 students—risks cash shortages or state receivership if it cannot close its deficit, with Interim Superintendent Lisa August warning that further cuts and layoffs follow 150 staff reductions last year.  KSRO Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • The recreational Dungeness crab season opened Saturday along the Sonoma Coast, and state health officials issued a warning against eating the crabs’ internal organs—due to dangerous levels of domoic acid—since cooking does not neutralize the toxin. This advisory applies to fishers from the Sonoma-Mendocino county line to Point Reyes.  KSRO Radio
